This looks like it’s going to be something special.
All those years ago when it was announced that Planet of the Apes would be getting a reboot (origin story??) I was highly skeptical. The Mark Whalberg vehicle from the early 00’s was an imitation of a classic film – and suffice to say, it did not go down well with the critics. Then along comes the reboot announcement. My first instinct was to poo poo it as just another attempt to milk some money out of the franchise. But lo and behold Rise of the Planet of the Apes turned out to be a really good film. It had plenty of heart and a gripping story about a man and his monkey (the closest we’ll get to Y: The Last Man for quite some time I’d suspect).
Perfectly edited, perfectly judged. This almost works as fully fledged post apocolyptic horror movie, albeit a ninety second one.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes was 2011’s biggest surprise. A tense, incredibly moving remake of a beloved classic, made by Fox no less! It transcended it’s concept and exceeded everyone’s expectations.
Dawn doesn’t have the benefit of that surprise but based on this teaser alone it looks like we’re in for another treat.
