When Marvel released the Age Of Ultron trailer I thought we had peaked on Marvel news for a while, but NOPE.
At a conference in LA Marvel announced their whole Phase 3 lineup and it is sublime. So much so I’m not even sure where to start… I mean, Infinity Wars?!?! So much YES! We knew it was coming from the appearance of Thanos and then the Infinity Stone in Guardians but to have a date and a two part Avengers film is a nerds dream come true.
From the above you can see all the events and dates Marvel are promising us these delights. We have all the new cinematic characters plus more ongoing series to see us right through to 2019. Chadwick Boseman has been officially cast as Black Panther with a rumoured casting of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. No word yet on any casting for Captain Marvel or The Inhumans.
Oh and Civil War! Again, it’s been rumoured for a few weeks but to actually see one of Marvels (arguably) greatest events played out in live action is going to be incredible. I think most long time nerds would agree if we go back to 2005 or so when Marvel first started making moves to build their cinematic repertoire we didn’t anticipate anything on the scale of the universe they have built to date. And I’m not convinced they’re planning on slowing down even past phase 3.
With the introduction of Doctor Stange, Captain Marvel, Black Panther and the Inhumans they’re essentially starting new sub franchises. I really would not anticipate Marvel setting these new characters up for Infinity Wars just to let them fade out beyond 2019.
In fact they have almost everyone lined up here for The Illuminati. For those unfamiliar with The Illuminati it consists of a secret group of greatest minds in the Marvel Universe – Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Black Bolt and Reed Richards (but Marvel don’t currently have the cinematic rights to the Fantastic Four). One of The Illuminati’s greatest achievements was getting rid of Earths big green problem The Hulk, he was just a little too angry for their tastes. Hulk had a big adventure in the galaxy and subsequently came back and showed them how angry he could really get. So a couple of opportunities for phase 4 in there.
Infinity Wars could also be a good opportunity for Marvel to get in some fresh actors for existing roles. The whole premise of the Infinity Gauntlet is that it can control space, time and matter. Leaving them wide open to change actors for space time reasons.
And now I’ll put away my tinfoil hat and I’ll leave you with RDJ and Chris Evans facing off in preparation for their Civil War fisticuffs.
First things first. The trailer:

Go light a candle, use the scented ones for special occasions. Prepare for the biggest geekgasm of the year so far!
It was good right? If that doesn’t get you amped up for The Winter Soldier then you officially don’t have a pulse!
It’s a nice style for a comic book movie trailer. Lately we’ve seen these weird 5 minute previews of films where they take you through the whole plot, and this is kind of a different version of that. It gives you a continuous couple of minutes from the start of the film, just a little something to whet your appetite and then blasts you into some intense 2-3 second clips like a standard trailer.
I’m not sure I’m really a fan of seeing a whole 2 minutes of the film. Once I’ve seen the final product I’ll make a decision at that point as to whether it affects my enjoyment – but it definitely got me excited for the film, so from a marketing perspective it certainly does what it’s supposed to.
Deadgeek is still refusing to watch any comic book trailers but I know he is going to go nuts for this film.
Expect a review towards the end of the month for our thoughts.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is released March 28th in the UK.
We won’t mess about with silly introductions. You want to see what films are coming up you should be keeping an eye out for right?
Well, read on Nerds! We have trailers and release dates aplenty! Enjoy!
Maybe it’s just me but this is ridiculously… AWESOME! I love it, it’s so simple yet it says so much.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the third film in the MCUs Phase 2 and stars Chris Evans as Cap/Steve Rogers, Sebastian Stan as James “Bucky” Barnes/Winter Soldier and the usual MCU suspects Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson.
Set for release in 2014, this will follow this years excellent Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World which will be out later in 2013 and will be followed by Guardians of the Galaxy amd The Avengers 2. We cant wait!
It’s never really news when an actor comments on a film halfway through production. It’s nearly always a series of platitudes and meaningless hyperbole that tells us nothing we don’t already know. Chris Evans is different though. Always candid and frank, Evans never commits to guaranteeing quality, often offering modest and non commital quotes about how excited everyone is and how everyone wants to do a good job. During filming of Captain America he said he was confident but that “these things don’t always work out” which I’m sure delighted Marvel.
Compare that to Hugh Jackman who at every possible turn promises that the “next one” will be a proper Wolverine film and Evans’ honesty is rather refreshing.
Speaking with Collider he discussed Captain America’s new look* (which has enraged the internets, because as we all know if an internet fanboy isn’t angry about something it will die) and by extension, director Joss Whedon’s approach and geek credentials.
“The first (costume) was a 1940s look, very utilitarian, something that would serve a purpose on the battlefield. But in The Avengers, Joss just had a certain vision in his mind about what he wanted Cap to look like. That’s what he wanted to see. It’s so nice working on these movies and the director’s a fan. He’s the dude at Comic-Con that we’re terrified of pissing off. If Joss is happy, I’m happy”
It’s lovely hearing Whedon described as one of the dude’s at comic con because, frankly, that’s exactly what he is. Whatever the outcome, this is a labour of love for Whedon, his Don Quixote, and he will put his heart and his soul into it.
If Captain America is happy, we’re happy.
*For the record I really like the new look, but I liked Affleck’s costume in Daredevil so what do I know?
