Is There An Audience For More Punisher?
You’ve probably already seen Dirty Laundry, the Punisher fan film from former Frank Castle Thomas Jane. If not, take a gander…
Man I want a Jack Daniels right now.
Jane presented this short at Comic Con this year stating, “I wanted to make a fan film for a character I’ve always loved and believed in – a love letter to Frank Castle & his fans. It was an incredible experience with everyone on the project throwing in their time just for the fun of it. It’s been a blast to be a part of from start to finish; we hope the friends of Frank enjoy watching it as much as we did making it.”
So they did it for the lulz. Fair enough I guess. Three attempts have been made to get The Punisher right on the big screen. All three have their fans (seriously Deadgeek, how can you like The Expendables and NOT like Warzone?) but none of them were good films. The rights reverted to Marvel a while ago but I can’t see him returning to cinemas any time soon. To be honest that might be for the best because Jane’s short, more than anything convinces me that The Punisher could get some serious mileage on Television.
If anyone has been following AMC’s astonishing Breaking Bad, you will have seen just how good television can be and how well it can be used for long form story telling. That’s what this character needs. Like Walter White’s fall from grace, the story of Frank Castle and his descent into hell, carefully told, has the potential to shine in a serialised drama. Have the entire first series be the origin, end it with the tragedy that kick starts his crusade then show how this broken man slowly turns into the psychopath we know.
It can be done, and I’d bet Thomas Jane wants to do it. Why isn’t this happening?
