It Finally Happened… Live Action Akira is Greenlit
After numerous stops and starts, and umming and aahing, the live action Akira has been given the go ahead.
Warner Bros. have signed Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra (who helmed last year’s Unknown) to bring Katsuhiro Otomo’s Neo Tokyo techno nightmare to the big screen again with a reported budget of 90 million dollars.
I’m reserving any kind of judgement until some plot details emerge. Akira is a visually stunning film. One that, from a technical stand point alone, was a revelation. That will almost certainly be lost in this remake, so we’ll just have to see what “interesting take” Warner and Collet-Serra have up their sleeves. If it’s “set it in New York” then I’m renouncing Hollywood.
The fact that Warner are looking at Tron Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund to play either Tetsuo or Kaneda doesn’t bode well.
In brighter news, Otomo himself is producing so at least someone will know what’s going on.
